A Bird Doesn’t Sing…

Birds actually sing for quite a few reasons. In North America it is often the male bird we hear singing because they use their song to either attract a mate or to defend territories. In the tropics male and female birds will often sing a duet.

If you are up and outside during the early mornings you can often hear the beautiful sounds of a range of birds enthusiastically singing at dawn.

Some birds sing while flying, others sing while they are perched and some even use their bills or wings to make song and attract mates.

There is also a difference between a bird’s song and their call. Calls are used to talk with family members, alert other birds of an approaching predator, communicating while flying or letting other birds know where the good food is.

eNature has a great page for you to listen to the songs and calls of many North American bird species. Listen Here.

Nature sounds and morning birds singing is great for relaxation and I really enjoy working to the sounds of nature. Check out YouTube for lots of videos and sound tracks of nature and bird sounds for all over the world. Below are a couple of my favourites.
