Stop For A Picnic Lunch at Brighton’s Government Docks

We went off exploring the peninsula, after we setup the trailer, and found this little area where we stopped for a picnic. This small park is called Government Dock and it has a history that you’d never guess by looking at it.

Back in the 1920’s there was actually a hotel and dance pavilion here. Big bands and other entertainers brought in tourists from all over the place. After WWII tourism declined and the hotel was eventually closed and then torn down in the 1970’s.

As we approached the picnic table, that we saw from the small parking lot, we noticed something moving under it. This neighbourhood dog had the same idea as we did! He was keeping cool on the cement pad under the picnic table. We decided to let him have his spot and we walked down to the shoreline. All of the property on the north side of the Presquile peninsula is privately owned with docks and boats everywhere. The houses were of a variety of sizes and ages. Nature-Lover-2016-Brighton-Government-Dock-Ontario-Summer_1020341 Stop For A Picnic Lunch at Brighton's Government Docks

At the end of the dock we found the perfect spot for a picnic. There was this fantastic covered area that provided much needed shade and the breeze was cool and welcoming. Nature-Lover-2016-Brighton-Government-Dock-Ontario-Summer_1020342 Stop For A Picnic Lunch at Brighton's Government Docks

Maya was excited to see what was in the cooler for lunch. She got her share of treats once she patiently waited for us to get the lunch out and ready. Nature-Lover-2016-Brighton-Government-Dock-Ontario-Summer_1020347 Stop For A Picnic Lunch at Brighton's Government Docks

After lunch we decided to check out the ‘beach’ area to see if it was pet-friendly. Unfortunately there was broken glass and other obstacles that weren’t safe for an older dog with sight issues. Maya would have to wait for another place to get her toes wet.Nature-Lover-2016-Brighton-Government-Dock-Ontario-Summer_1020349 Stop For A Picnic Lunch at Brighton's Government Docks

Despite not being able to get wet, Maya seemed happy enough to wait to swim since she had nice cool treats in her belly.Nature-Lover-2016-Brighton-Government-Dock-Ontario-Summer_1020352 Stop For A Picnic Lunch at Brighton's Government Docks

We couldn’t walk passed the huge Cottonwood tree without taking a picture of Chitra hugging it. I think having her stand beside it really showed just how big in diametre the tree was. The tree was magnificent and had obviously been well taken care of and appropriately pruned through the years.

This little park, with its towering tree, shaded dock area and gentle breeze, really rejuvenated us after the long drive from Petrolia. We were definitely ready to begin our adventure in the area.
