After spending almost 4 years wandering around L’Anse aux Meadows, we drove the 2 kilometres to the Viking Port of Trade site, called Norstead. Admission fees were $10 for each of us and it featured a norse replica village with costumed guides who tried to stay in character. On site there is a chieftain’s hall, church and a workshop that were made to have the look and feel from the Viking Era. There is also a boat shed where there was a 54 foot replica Viking knarr which is where we listen to “Lanney” talk about what it would have been like to be a viking travelling from Greenland to Vinland. He was quite the interesting character.
During our visit we learned how the vikings made rope and how the blacksmith made nails. In the main building we were offered norse flatbread with cinnamon, cloves and bakeapple (Cloudberry) jam, which was very delicious.
We had a great visit to Norstead and would highly recommend it, in addition to L’Anse aux Meadows. The two sites were related but quite different in their approach.
