Inglis Falls’ Pines Loop Trail Along the Bruce Trail In The Autumn

Inglis Falls lies along the Bruce Trail, which follows the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara Falls to Tobermory. The Inglis Falls Conservation Area offers various views of the falls, from the top, middle and the bottom. Most times we would explore the falls area, but on this fall day we decided to hike one of the trails we hadn’t gone on before.

We were camping at Sauble Falls Provincial Park, which is about an hour away from Owen Sound, and we spend part of the trip driving to some of our favourite spots to experience it in the fall.

Above the falls is a dam that was used to control the flow of wall for the old Inglis Grist Mill that use to operate on this river.

Coming up on the sign above we chose to take the Pine Loop Trail which is also part of the Bruce Trail (Keeling Side Trail). We have already hiked the trail to Harrison Park and we have a preference to looped trails.

The trail seemed like it would be well marked but part way through we had to basically follow a foot path because we couldn’t find the trail markers.

The first part of the trail was marked by the Bruce Trail Committee as you can see from the two blue markers which indicated the this is a side trail and there is going to be a turn in the trail.

Many of the trees had already lost most of their leaves but some shrubs, oaks and beech were still displaying amazing colours.

Berries hung on trees in preparation of feeding the local birds that stay in the area even through the summer.

Along the trail we spotted these shaggy trees which I believe are Shagbark Hickories, but there are several trees that have this type of exfoliating bark.

If you love waterfalls and trails, the Inglis Falls Conservation Area is a place you should definitely visit. You can pay to park at the top of the falls, or you can park for free at Harrison Park and then take one of the trails the ends up at Inglis Falls. This waterfall is beautiful all year round and is probably the best in the area with its 18 metres of cascade through a steep gorge. Above the falls, along one of the trails you can even see some geological potholes, which are quite fascinating.
