While exploring Prince Edward County during our 2016 camping trip to Presquile Provincial Park, we stopped for a picnic dinner at Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park. This park is located 62 metres above the Bay of Quinte and offers some spectacular vistas and a 7.4 kilometre waterfront trail. The park is located on both sides of Highway 7 with the lake on one side and views of the bay on the other.
The lake has an ongoing supply of fresh clean water flowing into it but no one seems to know where it is coming from. The lake itself is quite large and looks very deep, by the colour of the water.
Maya was enjoying the cool breezes the were coming across the lake since during the trip we had to suffer through many sweltering hot days. It was nice to be able to explore the small park without burning up into flames.
From the one side of the park we could see the ferry that takes cars back and forth across an narrow passage in the Bay of Quinte. The ferry goes from Glenora to Adulphustown and seem very popular with tourists and locals.
The offered several shaded areas and picnic tables for visitors to use. There were no fees to use the park and plenty of parking, until the tour buses showed up. There were also washrooms on site.
Here’s another view of the Lake on the Mountain. We didn’t see too many people actually in the water, whether by the shore or in boats. I’m not sure if that’ because it was so windy. On the Ontario Parks website it only lists fishing as an activity.
It’s unfortunate that we have to continue to remind people to be respectful of nature and of public land.
At the one end of the park we found a spot in some deep shade to sit and enjoy the cool breeze and the beautiful skies. While we were sitting there we noticed a turtle under a parked truck that seemed to be trying to make its way to the water on the other side. The truck was providing it some much needed shade but the road was extremely busy and we were afraid that when it finally got brave enough to cross that it would get run over. As soon as it moved into a position where I could actually pick it up (it was quite large and I needed two hands to safely get it) I picked it up and crossed the road.
We placed the turtle on a rock and when the next wave came in he (or she) was off. When helping turtles it’s important to move them safely in the direction they are moving, otherwise they will turn around and try to return to the area and direction they were heading, which is probably not safe.
Another view of the Bay of Quinte with the ferry docked on the other side. The clouds were so fluffy and white that day, and looked even more amazing against the dark blue sky.
On our way back to Presquile, we stopped at our new favourite bakery, The Perfect ‘Lil Bake Shop, just outside of Picton. Do yourself a favour and check it out!
