Sarnia’s Animal Farm has been operating since 1964, thanks to the Seaway Kiwanis Club. The farm is located in Canatara Park and is open year round with free admission. Throughout the year the Kiwanis, and the City of Sarnia, put on several events, from Easter in the Park to Christmas on the Farm.
The entrance to the farm features a rocky river with a water wheel. You’ll often find a variety of ducks and swans in the river.
The farm is a great place to take kids to see animals up-close and to develop a relationship with our animal counterparts. Several of the more domesticated animals can be touched but most are enjoyed from a short distance.
For budding animal photographers, whether your interest is in wildlife or pet photography, the farm is a fantastic location to practice techniques when capturing animals in natural light and somewhat natural surroundings.
This bunny was foraging near the cow enclosure and seemed uninterested in the clicking sounds of the camera. Several children bent down close to get a better look but these animals aren’t pets and, like this rabbit, some will hop away if we get too close or are too loud.
This shaggy horse, or is it a large pony, was keeping its distance today but it will often follow visitors along the fence line to see if anyone has an apple or is willing to give its muzzle a scratch.
The goats are almost always climbing up the inside of their enclosure to get closer to visitors. They love the taste of long green grass, but watch your fingers because they may nibble them if you get too close.
In the winter you may find some of the animals inside of the main, red barn. You’ll also find the pregnant females there and, soon after, their kids. The main barn also has a variety of chickens, doves, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Make sure you have time to watch the animals interacting with each other and learn about their behaviours. Unless you live on a farm, this is the next best place to experience these animals.
In the river that surrounds the farm, you will find many ducks, geese and swans. These two male mallards were following each other around in the water.
You will probably also see a few waterfowl that are less common, like a pair of wood ducks or even a Great Blue Heron! T
