The American architect, systems theorist, author, designer and inventor,Richard Buckminister “Bucky” Fuller , was born in 1895. We can thank Bucky for such terms as “Spaceship Earth”, for popularizing the geodesic dome and for designing the Montreal Biosphere.
Fuller spent 3 years with the U.S. Navy where he invented a winch for rescue boats that could retrieve airplanes from the water in order to save the pilots who were stuck onboard. This was the beginning of a fruitful career.
He spent half a century designing practical, inexpensive shelters, like the energy-efficient Dymaxion house which you can find at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, and various forms of transportation.
In addition to inventing, Fuller also was the editor and publisher of Shelter magazine, he consulted for Fortune magazine, he was the president of a wide range of companies and later became a professor.
