Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan are gearing up to enjoy their Family Day long weekend starting – February 14th – 16th. That’s three full days to relax, spend time with your family and to get outside and enjoy nature!
Check out local outdoor activities that may be going on. You can also take your family to a nearby park to play Winter Outdoor Bingo or go on a Scavenger Hunt.
If you happen to be lucky enough to live close to one of our Ontario Parks that operates during the winter, you should check out their special events! A lot of their events will be weather permitting, but what isn’t in Canada during the winter?
Algonquin Park will have their Skating Rink at Mew Lake Campground open, their Ski Trails groomed and ready (Fen Lake, Leaf Lake, and Minnesing Ski Trails) and an amazing Art Exhibit at the Visitor’s Centre featuring photography by Chuck Beamish and Mark Majchrowski. If you are in Algonquin for Family Day Weekend, you will definitely need to take part in their Winter in the Wild Festival. All of these activities are free, once you have your Daily Vehicle Permit or Camping Permit. Check out the list of events and watch the video from 2013 – it looks like a lot of fun!
MacGregor Point and Arrowhead Provincial Parks both have great Ice Trails through the woods that make for some interesting skating. You can also rent a tube to use the Tubing Hill at Arrowhead . Bronte Creek is also open and has a huge Outdoor Skating Rink, trails for walks and for Snowshoeing. Check with each park to see about rentals.
Killarney Provincial Park is holding a series of special events that weekend. There will be a Free B.B.Q. Lunch on Sunday, followed by Guided Snowshoe Hikes and a Landscape Photography Workshop. In the evening, there are guest speakers and Dinner at the Killarney Bay Inn. Check out the Friends of Killarney Park for more details.
For those of us who live in southwestern Ontario, Pinery Provincial Park is open with lots of great outdoor adventures available. Cross-country Skiing, Snowshoeing, Tobogganing, Skating and Hiking.
You can also check out your local Conservation Area to see if they have any events for the weekend.
