My day started with a drive into Kanata to get my truck fixed at the local Nissan dealership there. The hinge for the gate window snapped while we were at Bon Echo Provincial Park and luckily we secured it safe enough to make the 2-hour trip to Fitzroy Provincial Park, as planned. We had called the nearest dealership to the park to see if they could get two hinges delivered in time for an early morning appointment. Everything went smoothly and it isn’t uncommon for unexpected repairs to pop up during longer trips, especially when you have an ageing vehicle.
When I got back to the trailer, we had a quick lunch and then decided to drive to the nearby conservation area of Morris Island. The 47-hectare park is located along the Ottawa River and features 6 kilometres of hiking trails, picnic areas and a new, very clean washroom. The park also offers some great canoeing and birdwatching.
We hiked the Old Voyageur Trail and checked out most of the scenic lookouts that we came across. If we were staying at Fitzroy longer, we would have hiked all of the trails. They were very flat, limestone crush trails with beautiful lookouts and a variety of landscapes. We would have loved to canoe the area too if we owned our own canoe. We would definitely recommend the conservation area for those wanting more hiking options close to the park. The trails are kid, stroller and wheelchair accessible. The washrooms (including a privy) were all wheelchair accessible.
