Photographing Winter Birds At The Pinery

The Pinery Provincal Park is about 45 minutes from our home. We enjoy camping there and driving up for the day, no matter what season it is. In the winter part of the park is closed but there are still several trails, plus the beach that visitors can enjoy.

Before or after we have hiked or gone snowshoeing some of the trails, I like to stop off at the Visitor’s Centre to watch and photograph the birds. The park keeps a variety of feeders filled year round so that visitors can get a good look at some of the birds and wildlife the park has. There’s even an area that you can enjoy from inside the building!

The most common birds spotted at the Pinery Visitor’s Centre during the winter are Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, Tufted Titmice, Downy Woodpeckers, Rose and White Breasted Nuthatches, House Finches, House Sparrows, American Tree Sparrows, Mourning Doves, Black-capped Chickadees,  and American Goldfinches.

Can you walk your dog on the dog beach at the Pinery during the winter months and where can you photograph the birds ?
    Thanks

      Hi Beverley,
Sorry, it seems like I missed your comment. I have seen many people on the beaches with their dogs in the winter, although I can’t confirm the park allows it, maybe they overlook it? There are 2 formal dog beaches but they aren’t accessible during the winter.
There are many great places to photograph birds. The easiest place would be at the Visitor’s Centre since they actually feed the birds there. Other places I would recommend would be the trail along the river near Riverside Campground and the Riverside Trail always has lots of birds.
