Charleston Lake Provincial Park is located north of Brockville, Ontario and is part of an extension of the Canadian Shield. The park features a variety of hiking trails, and opportunities for swimming, canoeing, fishing and wildlife viewing.
Take a relaxing hike along Charleston Lake Provincial Park’s Shoreline Trail. One of several gorgeous trails at the park, this 2.0 kilometre hike features a mixed hardwood forest, shoreline views and access to Charleston Lake for swimming or spotting wildlife. The lake was carved out of a narrow extension of the Canadian Shield which normally is found much farther north giving the park a rugged “Algonquin Park” feel.
We hiked this trail a couple of times during our stay at the park and it was definitely one of the more popular trails since there was a picnic area and swimming spot that people enjoy. The spot offered amazing views of the lake and shoreline but the rock where people were entering was sloped, slippery and covered in some type of mussel. Not sure how easy it was for them to get in and out, maybe they wore shoes that I didn’t notice?
We didn’t swim at the park during our stay because our campsite wasn’t close to the water and almost every afternoon there was a storm. The water looked clear and inviting though and I hope we find ourselves at the park in the future so that we can swim, hike and canoe it!
