On our last day at Killarney Provincial Park, before heading to Grundy Lake, we hiked the Granite Ridge Trail. This 2.5 kilometre looped trail was quite different than the other trails we hiked while camping at Killarney.
The trail started from a parking lot and then wound through some old fields, birch stands and a planted pine tree area. During this part of the trail, which was quite flat and easy, we walked past the reminds of some old equipemtn and the remains of an old, rusty shell of a vehicle.
The trail gradually got a bit rougher and started heading up hill.
Chitra found a spot to enjoy the weather and get close to nature while Maya checked out the backpack to get close to the snacks.
There were two lookouts along the trail that Chitra and Maya didn’t walk too because they were either too steep or too far for Maya that morning. The first lookout was to the south and gave fantastic views of Collin’s Inlet and Phillip Edward Island. Georgian Bay stretched out behind them on both sides.
The north lookout, which also wasn’t very well marked, gave some breathtaking views of the La Cloche Range and it’s Quartizite rock hills.
The ridges, which were once as high as the Himalayas (like a billion years ago), have eroded over the centuries and are now these smooth hills which are sparsely covered with coniferous trees. We continued back into the forest, over partially built boardwalks and up and down hills, until we finally arrived back to the vehicle. Then we were back to the site to back up the little Boler and head to our next stop in our Epic Summer Camping Trip – Grundy Lake Provincial Park!
