Henri Matisse was a french artist who was known mostly for his paintings, even though he studied to be a lawyer. He lived from 1869 to 1954 and was friends with Pablo Picasso.
Through his career he was a draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter. His painting style changed many times, from Fauvism to modernism to impressionism.
In his final years he created paper collages (decoupage) which are often referred to as “cut-outs”.
