In the summer of 2016, we headed to Presqu’ile Provincial Park near the town of Brighton, Ontario. The park is located on the northern shore of Lake Ontario and is a famous spot for bird watching, especially during spring and fall migration.
One of the places at the park that became our favourite evening spots to visit was Calf Pasture Cove. We saw so many wildflowers, birds, insects and animals while we were sitting at the cove enjoying the evening light and atmosphere. One evening, we sat and watched a family of Muted Swans foraging in the shallows of Calf Pasture Cove (see Youtube Video). Below we show you some of the wildlife we photographed on our various visits to the cove.
For over half an hour we watched this beaver swimming back in forth in the cove. It would drive down, grab a root and then chomp on it with it’s cute little paws. I only wished I had catch some of it on video.
This tern flew back and forth over the cove and out into the bay searching for food. Every once in a while it would make a straight drive into the calm water to catch small fish. I’m not sure if this is a Common or Caspian Tern since I never saw which colour it’s legs were.
A Great Blue Heron sat on different dead branches resting and preening itself in the evening sun.
A pair of Kingfishers made multiple trips into the cove for food. They were off on the other side of the cove and never came too close to us.
Flocks of White Egrets were spotted flying over Presqu’ile Bay.
And families of swans were often seen both in the cove, marsh and the bay. Below is the video of the swan family foraging in the cove.
