A group of bears can be called a sleuth or a sloth. Of course not every bear can be found in a group. Panda bears are fairly solitary, as are polar bears, when not rearing young.
Did you know that there are 8 different species of bears in the world?
- 1. Panda Bear – found in south central China
- 2. Sloth Bear – found on the Indian Subcontinent
- 3. Spectacled Bear – foundin South America
- 4. Polar Bear – found in the Arctic Circle
- 5. American Black Bear – found in North America
- 6. Asian, Moon or White-chested Bear – found in the Himalayas, parts of India, Korea, northeastern China, Russian Far East, Taiwan, and on some Japanese islands.
- 7. Brown Bear or Grizzly Bears – found in Eurasia and North America
- 8. Malayan Sun Bear or Honey Bear – found in Southeast Asia
There is also evidence that a ninth bear use to exist in Africa. It was called the Atlas Bear and the last known one was killed by hunters in 1870.
Speaking of bears, did you know that koalas are not bears even though they are often referred to as koala bears? Koalas are actually marsupials – they have a pouch!
The red panda isn’t a bear either although in the past it has been placed in the racoon and bear families in the past.
