Arriving At Bon Echo Provincial Park – Days 1-2

On our fifth day of camping, we packed up the trailer and headed from Silent Lake Provincial Park to Bon Echo Provincial Park. When we arrived we asked about any available electric sites, but there were none available. Our site was a large corner one that was pretty loud for most of the time we were there, between larger groups of campers, kids and/or the generator across from us.

After a quick dinner, we drove down to check out the cliffs and the pet beach. Both the Upper and Lower Mazinaw Lakes were quite large and there were motorboats and jet skis allowed.

The next day we packed up a lunch and drove to the other side of the park to hike the Chutes trail. We applied DEET, Flicks Spray on the dog and put on our bug jackets before heading onto the trail. Unfortunately, we only got about half a kilometre onto the trail before the biting flies started swarming and climbing under Chloe’s fur, so we decided to turn back. Maybe Chloe needs a bug jacket?

While we were over in that area we continued down the road to check out JoePerry Lake. I walked down the 500-metre path to the lake. The path was wide, with a cool breeze blowing off the lake and when I arrived at the dock I even got some cell service!

We drove back to the main park and took Chloe to the dog exercise area and beach. She got her toes wet but still refuses to go deep enough to swim. The bog beach was sandy, shallow and quite warm. The area had some shade, a few picnic tables and a large leash-free area.

Getting back into the truck we took a drive to look for supplies since we would be staying at the park for a week and there were no supplies available in the park. In Cloyne, we found free wifi at the library and a basic general store that also sold pizza. Farther south, Northbrook had everything we would need including a gas station (with propane tanks and Country Style coffee), a Foodland grocery store, a liquor store, Beer Store, large general store, laundromat, bank and even a car wash. Kaladar wasn’t worth the drive since they only had a gas station, subway and Country Style coffee shop.
