Autumn Colours At Sauble Falls Provincial Park

It was mid October, 2017 when we were last at Sauble Falls Provincial Park and the colours were spectacular. It was a perfect weekend to camp at the small campground near the base of the Bruce Peninsula. From this park we can easily visit Oliphant, walk the Petrol Point Fen boardwalk and take a drive to Wiarton. We have also recently found trails along Highway 13 at the Rural Rootz Nature Reserve. Plus, if you have a dog there is an old baseball diamond at the corner of Highway 13 and Sauble Falls Parkway that has been converted into a dog park.

Early morning walks around the small park were the highlight of the trip. The days were clear and bright which made the fall colours even more vivid.

A chipmunk frequented our site and was kind enough to stay on this tree trunk so that I could snap off a shot.

Lots of trees had already shed their leaves which rustled under our shoes as we took leisurely strolls around the quiet park.

There were only a few sites that were taken by other trailers and that made this weekend even more enjoyable. Since Sauble Falls Provincial Park is so small, it is often not the quietest park to stay at in the middle of the summer. We have also found that some of the cottagers on the other side of the river can be quite rowdy with loud parties and lighting off fireworks.

The falls, which are usually jam-packed with people during the summer, only had a few fisherman. A sign at the edge of the falls denotes this area as a federal sanctuary all year round, so I hope they weren’t keeping any rainbow or brown trout that they caught.

For mid fall the river still seemed to be pretty high. The amount of water appeared to be as much as I have seen during summer visits. I can’t remember if it was a particularly rainy year or not.

I always love this one spot along the waters edge. The cedar tree has grown out from the rocky edge and hung on with its vast root system.

This low, wide waterfalls is a great swimming spot during the summer, but be prepared to enjoy it with a lot of other people. At the top of the falls the park rents out canoes and paddleboats for a very reasonable price.

Chitra was all bundle up on this cool fall day while we made our way down the stairs to check out the waterfalls. In late September the salmon come through here, but I haven’t been at the park to see that.

This was the morning view through the trees from our campsite. I always love to see reflections on the water. What a great place to camp in the fall! Keep in mind that Sauble Falls Provincial Park is only open until the last weekend in October, which is longer than most.
