In the fall of 2017, we went fall camping to Sauble Falls Provincial Park. During that trip we made a driving trip up to Lion’s Head and area. The small town is situated on a bay that is part of Georgian Bay and there are fantastic views of the Niagara Escarpment.
Looking out from Lion’s Head Beach, across the Harbour, you can spot the marina, the lighthouse and escarpment which is part of the Lion’s Head Provincial Park.
The shoreline along the larger Isthmus Bay is made up of large, round stones that help to decrease erosion caused by large storms off of Georgian Bay. Chitra is looking for some skipping stones but they are very few and far between.
Growing among the rocks we found several flowers still blooming in October. Above you can see the snapdragon like flowers of the Yellow Toadflax, otherwise known as Butter-and-Eggs. Bees and bumblebees help with its pollination while several butterflies and moths use it as a food source.
This Viper’s Bugloss was quite healthy, even though it was very small compared to those growing in more fertile areas. This plant is also commonly known as Blueweed and usually only flowers from May to September. With the warmer temperatures these plants were easily extending their flowering period.
Another non-native plant along the beach was this Herb-Robert, which is in the Geraniaceae family is the Herb-Robert plant. This particular plant has quite a few other names: Red Robin, Death Come Quickly, Storksbill, Fox Geranium, Stinking Bob and so on. It has been said to help with healing wounds and dealing with nosebleeds and toothaches.
The Lion’s Head Lighthouse is a well-maintained replica of the original 1903 building. It is a very picturesque location and I have captured many beautiful images of it throughout the years.
In the fall most of the boats and tourists have long gone and it’s a great time and location to sit and reflect. The colours in the water and the bright blue sky were absolutely spectacular that day and we were very happy to have taken the drive up to the area. For those looking to stay in the area, check out their campgrounds, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts and even a hostel.
