Preparing a fire with basic materials and a fire starter can be a very rewarding and relaxing part of any camping trip.
Using birch bark, pine sap, pine needles, cattail fluff and cedar kindling, I start a fire with a ferro rod and striker during a fall trip to the Pinery Provincial Park.
It’s always best to collect some of the materials ahead of time to make sure they are dry. Often you can buy birch firewood from provincial parks and I save the excess birch bark to start future fires. You can make your own fire starters in case you can find dry tinder.
