Why doesn’t my new fire steel work?

Learn what you need to do to make sparks with your new flint or ferro rod before you try to make a fire. This is definitely something that is very important to know before heading into the woods or before a survival situation happens.

Fire making is said to be one of the most important skills that all bushcrafters need to learn and practice. Using a regular piece of sandpaper and a little bit of time you can prepare any firesteel, whether it’s a basic Coghlan flint fire starter you pick up at your local outdoors / camping store, or a better ferro rod.
