After a mid day rain, and a light lunch, we drove up to Cow Head and Shallow Bay to hike the Old Mail Road Trail. We started hiking the 2 kilometre trail but the midges were so bad in the forest area that we decided to walk the beach instead.
Along the way there are signs talking about the history of the trail. The path used to be the old mail route from 1882 and 1952. Along the beach there were signs about the endangered Piping Plovers and sections were closed to protect their breeding grounds. They also have areas set aside for nesting terns.
