On a rainy day in the fall, while camping at the Pinery Provincial Park, we hiked the 2.3 kilometre Cedar Trail. This rare Oak Savanna trail is wheelchair accessible and very easy. For a longer, less easy option, visitors can extend their hike and head to the shores of Lake Huron.
We only hiked the main loop and, even though it was raining, had a great time looking for the various oak trees and the large variety of mushrooms along the trail.
The Cedar Trail is located at the Visitor’s Centre parking lot and is a very flat, very easy walk through a beautiful oak savanna. The trail has a lookout platform at the edge of the Old Ausable River where you can often spot fish, frogs, birds, waterfowl and a variety of mammals. The trail is quite shady and perfect for a hot summer day, but it is also open year-round and can be enjoyed during any visit to the park.
