Here’s a blast from the past. I’m trying to do season related posts and I have a lot of content from past trips and adventures. This one is from January 2013 and features our beloved Maya The Nature Dog!
During cold, snowy winters, the shores of Lake Huron often get backed up with compressed snow and ice that create “land”. This was one of those winters and Maya enjoyed playing on these surfaces both in the Sarnia area and at the Pinery Provincial Park near Grand Bend.
Normally Maya would be swimming if she were that far out during any other time of the year. The water is deep and runs fast at the mouth of Lake Huron where it meets the St. Clair River.
Rolling, eating snow and making snow puppies were a favourite winter past-time for Maya. With her Double Coat of fur, that all Labrador Retrievers have, she was nice and warm in the winter months. In her last couple of years we started putting on coats to keep her warm since older dogs have a more difficult time with the heat and the cold.
In the background you can see the Port Huron lighthouse across the river. The state of Michigan is located just across the St. Clair River.
This picture almost looks like it could have been taken up in Northern Canada. What do you think?
Off in the distance you can see ice floating from the lake into river. Some years the river freezes over and either stops all shipping or requires the Coast Guard to use their ice breakers.
Look at how clear the water looks. You can see the rocks below. Anyone for a ‘polar dip’?
Maya found something to dig for. Who knows what she actually found.
Another shot along the shore showing the ice flow, clear water and lighthouse in the background.
Around the corner from the snow and ice build up are the Bluewater Bridges. These bridges span the distance and the divide between Canada and the United States.
