May Brings New Wildflowers and Wildlife At Marthville Habitat

A month ago there were May-apples just starting to appear, Trilliums and Trout Lily everywhere and Coltsfoot in full bloom at Marthaville Habitat. Now, May has come, the weather has started to change again and the habitat has continued to grow and change, as it does every year and every season.

As I wandered the paths I noticed the Wild Ginger growing and spreading in the shady parts of the woods. The Wild Geraniums, Columbine and various trees blossums were vibrant against the new green leaves of ferns and the low growing Strawberry plants. Jack-in-the-pulpits were scattered along the forest flower and the May-apple blossums were peeking out from their protective canopies. I spotted new birds nests being built in trees, with soon to be parents hard at work to complete them. Different butterflies and even caterpillars were found resting on leaves and soaking up the sun.

Many of last month’s wildflowers have either completely disappeared, or have gone to seed. Trilliums were showing their age by changing their colour from bright white to worm pink. Other plants were still emerging from their winter rest, waiting for the heat of the summer to fully awaken them.

Getting out to the same location but in different months or seasons is very facsinating and rewarding. Don’t overlook your local green spaces and parks when looking for a place to enjoy nature.
