Wildflowers At Costello Lake Picnic Area – Algonquin Park

The Costello Lake Picnic Area is located on the road that goes north to Lake Opeongo from Highway 60 in Algonquin Park. The small area has picnic tables, privies, as well as garbage and recycling for those coming back from backcountry camping.

We often stop at this picnic area while out hiking trails because it’s usually pretty quiet and it always has some shade. It’s a great place to get out the Whisperlite to boil up some water and have a nice lunch or dinner. On this particularly hot day we had a cool lunch and then Chitra sat in the truck and read while Maya had a nap in the shade. I grabbed my camera to see what there was to photograph and I was pleasantly surprised to find a variety of wildflowers just on the perimeter of the cleared area.
I spotted asters, Heal-all, goldenrods, Hawkweed, Pearly Everlasting, Joe Pye Weed, Ox-eyed Daisies and Bird’s-foot Trefoil. Keep your eyes open, you’ll also be surprised what you find!
