Identifying Wildflowers: Common Mullein (non-native)

Common Name: Great Mullein
Scientific Name: Verbascum thapsus
Family: Scrophulariaceae (Figwort)
Origins: Europe (non-native)
Flowering Time: June to September
Habitat: Fields, waste places and roadsides.
Range: Found throughout most of North Amercia, not including Yukon, Northwest Territories, Labrador and Nunavut.
Use: Leaves have been used for wicks, First Nations people lined their moccasins with the leaves to keep them warm, teas were used to treat colds and the leaves have been used to soothe sunburns.
