The Gorgeous, But Long Green Gardens Trail in Gros Morne National Park

Green Gardens Trail was one of our absolute favourites from the entire trip, it was also one of the longest. The is 10 kilometres long, return trip, but it well worth the time and effort. The trail started at a parking area and went up an orange, rocky, winding incline to a beautiful lookout. The lookout provided amazing views of Bonne Bay and Lookout Hills. The trail then decended through low shrubs, bushes and tuckamores.

From there we hiked up another peak to a rocky area with a view of mountains on all sides and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Fog was rolling in over the gulf and low level clouds were flowing over the mountains. Down another incline, through a boreal forest, we came upon cliffs and steep steps down to the beach.

On the beach, we saw a lava pillow and sea stacks, as well as a small waterfall coming over the cliff edge. We were going to explore the sea cave but the tide was coming in and we couldn’t get to it. If you are wanting to check it out, be sure to check the tide charts so that you time your arrival on the beach appropriately.

We had peanut butter and applebake jam sandwiches and then started the long, hot hike out. Maya put her toes in every stream she found and had a full dip into the Gulf of St. Lawrene for fun, and to cool down.  She also found some moose poop to roll in, so we were very happy that she followed that with a real swim in the gulf.

At the top of the first mountain, on the way back, we had another picnic snack and enjoyed the absolutely fantastic clouds.

By the time we arrived back to the parking lot, we were all exhausted from the heat and the hike. Pack lots of water and snacks for this travel, but do hike the trail, if you ever have the chance!
