While visiting Gros Morne National Park, we took the opportunity to go down to the beach where there were remnants of a ship that went down in 1919 off the shores of Martin’s Point. The coal-burning steamer laid in rusted pieces all over the beach, with a plaque explaining the history of the ship and its demise.
After a blizzard blew up without warning, and the captain realized they burned through their supply of coal, he decided to try to beach the vessel in order to try to save the 92 lives aboard the ship. With the help of people on shore, and possibly a Newfoundland dog, all lives were saved, including a baby in a mail bag. It’s an interesting story and definitely worth a trip down to the beach.
