Cape Forchu Lightstation On Nova Scotia’s Shores

Located 11 kilometres outside of Yarmouth is the gorgeous Cape Forchu Lighthouse. This lighthouse is perched on the edge of a rocking outcropping into the Atlantic Ocean.

The lighthouse was originally built in 1839 but was completely demolished in 1961. They were also doing some upgrades and repairs while we were there. Unlike most of the wooden lighthouses along the Great Lakes, this lighthouse is made from reinforced concrete.

The Leif Erickson Park, which surrounds the lighthouse, includes rugged trails with scenic ocean views. If you have seen the 2018 movie “The Lighthouse”, then you might recognize the area.

Interesting fact, the storm surges in this area frequently reach more than 5.7 metres, which is why there are so many shipwrecks in the area and why it’s so important that the lighthouse has a 30 nautical mile range.

The Cape Forchu Lighthouse is on public grounds now and the keepers house is a Heritage property that visitor can visit. The Keeper’s Kitchen and a gift shop are open from May to September.
