The Islands Provincial Park, Nova Scotia

Our fourth week of our East Coast camping trip was spent in Nova Scotia. We stayed at The Islands Provincial Park, just across the harbour from Shelburne. We used the campground as a base for trips around the area. We had booked site #40 but when we arrived it was so small that we actually drove past it. We went back up to the office and switched to site #45 which had a view of the harbour and was big enough to setup our tent, screen tent and tarp.

We found the campground to be small, but cozy. It featured only 63 sites, a comfort station, beach, boat launch and a gate house. There were no trails at the park.

We had our breakfasts at the site and only a few evenings. One night we were kept up until after 1 pm because Shelburne had an extremely loud street dance that could be plainly heard across the harbour.

Some of our day trips, which we will be blogging about, included a walking tour of Yarmouth, a walk around Lunenburg, “The Hawk” beach, Kejimkujik Seaside National Park, Cape Forchu Lighthouse, an Acadian driving tour and more.

Overall, The Islands was a great place to take day trips from and had everything that we needed in a ‘base camp’. We especially enjoyed the loons and cormorants on the harbour, and spotting an Arctic Hare!
